Echmiadzin is the first Christian temple in the world. It is 20km west of Yerevan. It was founded in 303. It is the holy seat of the Armenian Apostolic Church. It is the Mother Cathedral of Armenia, with its outlying early medieval churches and treasury. For centuries this has been a cultural and educational center of Armenian. In 405 Mesrop Mashtots and Catholic Sahak Partev translated the Bible into Armenian. Many generations of clergy have lived and created within the walls of Holy Echmiadzin. Here Armenian literature, miniature, painting, medical science, astronomy have flourished. You’ll have an chance to visit three unique churches in Echmiadzin: Hripsime, Gayane and Shogakat. Church Hripsime is one of the finest works of Armenian architecture of the classical period. It stands on a slight elevation, at the eastern edge of Echmiadzin. This kind   of composition is characteristic only of the Christian churches of the Trans Caucasus. Its expressive silhouette, seen from afar, stands up sharply against the background of Emerald-green valley dominated by the snow-capped Mt. Ararat. It was included in the list of the UNESCO. This church was completed in 618 on the grave of saint Hripsime, who was trying to spread Christianity.   Church Gayane is near the Cathedral and was founded in 630 on the grave of saint Gayane who was one of the virgins who were trying to spread Christianity in Armenia.     This is a domed basilica and is very interesting. Zvartnots temple was built in the 7-th century. Zvartnots in Armenian means << vigil forces>>. The rich and extraordinary interior decoration of the temple is an evidence, apart from the relieves, by the pieces of vary-colored smart and tuff mosaic ornaments and fragments of murals which survived on remnants of   plaster. This is a monument which embodies the centuries-old traditions of remain architects. It is an outstanding monument of the world architecture, an evidence of the high level of the development of the artistic and engineering of the 7-th century in Armenia. Unfortunately this magic lay in ruins in the 10-th century the reason of which hasn’t been discovered until now. Even in the ruins it is worth visiting.
